1.  Clean glassware, dishes, toys, etc with bleach before storing.  Food crumbs can attract pests. Upholstery & clothing from the basement can be damp which will attract mold to spread in your unit.  So, plan ahead and clean all items a few days before storing and leave in a well-ventilated area to dry.

2.  Choose the proper boxes.  For cloth, decor, clothing, etc store in a sealed, plastic container.  This will prevent moisture from getting in.  However, if you are storing books, art, etc you may want to use breathable, acid-free boxes.

3.  Keep the airflow in your unit.  Try to avoid packing furniture against the walls and leave room between stacked boxes.  Place cardboard boxes on pallets.  The pallet creates a buffer between the concrete floor and the boxes.  As concrete is porous, it can sometimes harbour moisture.

4.  Make a DIY Dehumidifier.  Place a bag of kitty litter (inexpensive clay litter) in the middle of your unit, with the bag left open.  It will absorb any moisture in the air, keeping your possessions safe from mold and mildew.

5.  Treat leather goods.  Clean them well with vinegar and water to remove any lingering fungal spores from blooming.  Finally, protect the leather with a layer of conditioner.  This helps seal the leather against moisture, helping to prevent mold growth.

6.  Pack Your Unit On A Dry Day!  If you load your storage unit on a rainy day, you will be left with damp boxes, mattresses, etc.  Ideally, put off loading your unit until a clear day.  If you absolutely must move in the rain, use a tarp to cover items when moving from the truck to the storage unit.

7.  Do not store cardboard boxes, mattresses, fabric, etc,  directly on the concrete floor.  Place a plastic tarp or canvas tarp on the floor to wick away any moisture.  They aren't expensive and they aren't vulnerable to mold and mildew.  This also helps in the cleanup of your unit when moving out.  This is your best friend when moving into a self storage unit!
